What is DNA genealogy?

DNA genealogy analyses specific regions of your genome inherited along paternal or maternal lines virtually unchanged for thousands of generations. This allows us to trace the migration of your ancestors across continents.

The result is your haplogroup — a genetic group sharing a common ancestor, mapped to specific historical populations and geographic regions.

Y-DNA: paternal line via Y-chromosome — requires a male sample

mtDNA: maternal line via mitochondrial DNA — men and women

Haplogroup and migration map of your ancestors

Processed in an accredited Czech laboratory (ISO 17025)

Y PRO – Paternal Line

Y-DNA PRO is an advanced genealogical test of the paternal lineage, analysing the Y chromosome — the genetic information passed exclusively from father to son across thousands of generations. Because the Y chromosome is inherited along the paternal line virtually unchanged, it allows your paternal ancestry to be traced thousands of years into the past and lets you be assigned to a specific Y-haplogroup — a genetic "branch" shared by men descending from a common distant forefather. Compared to the basic variant, the PRO test examines an extended set of Y-STR markers, allowing more precise assignment to a subhaplogroup, finer matching against ancestral databases, and a deeper reconstruction of the migration routes of your male ancestors — typically from Africa through the Near East into present-day Europe. For Central European men these are often haplogroups R1a (associated with the Slavic expansion), R1b (Western European), I1, I2, or E1b1b. The result is a detailed final report including haplogroup assignment, a migration map, and a comparison with global reference populations. The test is available for men only, since the Y chromosome is carried and inherited exclusively through the male line. If you are a woman and wish to explore your paternal lineage, you will need to have a male relative from your father's side tested — your father, brother, paternal grandfather, paternal uncle, or paternal male cousin. Sampling is entirely non-invasive — a buccal (cheek) swab using the DNA kit we send free of charge with clear instructions. This test is intended strictly for genealogical and educational purposes; it is not a medical or kinship test.

DUO PRO – Both Lines (Y-DNA + mtDNA)

DUO PRO is the most comprehensive genealogical test in our portfolio. With a single order and a single sample collection, you receive the advanced analysis of both of your deep genetic lineages — maternal (mitochondrial DNA, mtDNA) and paternal (Y chromosome). You will learn not only where the ancestors of your mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother came from, but also the origins of your father's, grandfather's, and all male ancestors' line. The test combines both PRO variants: extended mtDNA sequencing (HVR1 + HVR2, and in some cases the entire mitochondrial genome) for precise assignment to a maternal haplogroup and subhaplogroup, together with extended Y-STR analysis for fine-grained placement within a paternal Y-haplogroup. The result is a single consolidated final report containing both haplogroups, migration maps of your distant ancestors from both lines, and a comparison with global reference populations — a complete genetic family tree reaching thousands of years into the past. The test is recommendid for men, as it includes analysis of the Y chromosome, which is carried and inherited exclusively through the male line. Women who wish to obtain a similarly comprehensive picture are recommended to ensure they can collect samples of male relative from the paternal side (father, brother, uncle, or paternal male cousin). Sampling is non-invasive — a buccal (cheek) swab using the DNA kit we send free of charge with clear instructions. This test is intended strictly for genealogical and educational purposes; it is not a medical or kinship test.

mtDNA PRO – maternity lineage

mtDNA PRO is an advanced genealogical test of the maternal lineage, analysing mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) - the genetic information passed exclusively from mother to child across thousands of generations. Because mtDNA is inherited along the maternal line virtually unchanged, it allows your maternal ancestry to be traced thousands of years into the past and lets you be assigned to a specific haplogroup - a genetic "branch" shared by people descending from a common female ancestor. Compared to the basic variant, the PRO test analyses an extended region of the mitochondrial genome (both HVR1 and HVR2, and in some cases the entire mtDNA). This enables more precise assignment to a subhaplogroup and a finer reconstruction of the migration routes of your distant ancestors - from Africa through the Near East into present-day Europe and other parts of the world. The result is a detailed final report including haplogroup assignment, a migration map, and a comparison with global reference populations. The test is suitable for both men and women - a man inherits mtDNA from his mother in the same way as a woman; he simply does not pass it on to his own children. Sampling is entirely non-invasive — a buccal (cheek) swab using the DNA kit we send free of charge with clear instructions. This test is intended strictly for genealogical and educational purposes; it is not a medical or kinship test.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Woman Do a Y-DNA Test?
Only men have a Y chromosome, so only men can take a Y-DNA test. Women can have a male relative (father, brother, uncle) tested — the results will reveal the paternal line of their family.
How Long Does Processing Take?
We process genealogy tests within 4–8 weeks of receiving the sample at the laboratory. Results are sent by email in PDF format.
How Is the Sample Collected?
Sample collection is simple and painless — just swab the inside of your cheek with a special brush. We'll mail you the collection kit, or you can visit our collection site in Prague.
What Is a Haplogroup?
A haplogroup is a genetic group of people sharing a common ancestor who lived thousands of years ago. Individual haplogroups are mapped to specific geographic regions and historical populations.
What Is the Difference Between Y-DNA and mtDNA Tests?
Y-DNA test traces the paternal line through the Y chromosome (men only). mtDNA test traces the maternal line through mitochondrial DNA (both men and women). DUO PRO combines both tests in one package.
